Whole-plant skincare begins with more than an ingredient name. We grow and gather botanicals, slowly infuse flowers and herbs, copper-distill pure plant waters, and extract whole frankincense and myrrh resins to capture compounds their essential oils leave behind.
Every extraction method is chosen for the individual plant. The result is concentrated skincare that honors its broader chemistry while remaining gentle enough for sensitive skin.
More Than organic
A formula can contain an organic botanical extract and still reveal very little about the plant itself. Where was it grown? When was it gathered? Which part of the plant was used? How was it extracted? What was preserved, and what was left behind?
At Flower & Fern, these questions shape every formula.
We work with flowers, leaves, roots, seeds and resins in forms that preserve a broader spectrum of their naturally occurring compounds. Instead of beginning with a premade cosmetic base and adding a botanical for its name, we build our formulas around the plants themselves.
Their natural colors, aromas and textures remain part of the finished product. These qualities are not imperfections. They are evidence of the botanicals within.
From Seed to Formula
Grown + Gathered
The quality of a formula begins with the quality of the plant.
Calendula, chamomile and roses are grown on our Oregon homestead using regenerative methods that care for the soil as thoughtfully as we care for the skin. Pine and rosehips are gathered from the surrounding landscape, while the botanicals we cannot grow ourselves are sourced from trusted organic farms and ethical suppliers.
We look beyond an ingredient’s name to its origin, freshness and quality because extraction can only preserve what was present in the plant to begin with.
Slowly Infused
Some plants require time.
Our botanical oils are infused slowly, often for four to six weeks, allowing oil-soluble constituents from flowers, herbs and resins to move gently into skin-compatible oils such as jojoba.
We do not rush this process. Every botanical is prepared according to its own structure and chemistry. Some are infused once, while others, such as our Damask rose, undergo a second infusion to create a more concentrated botanical oil.
The resulting infusions become the foundation of our serums, cleansers and restorative balms rather than appearing as a token botanical addition.
Copper-Distilled
Pure plant water, distilled in small batches.
Our hydrosols are distilled in-house using a traditional copper still. Through this process, water and plant material are transformed into aromatic botanical waters containing the plant’s naturally water-soluble and volatile compounds.
Each hydrosol is bottled fresh and used as the first layer of a Flower & Fern ritual, replenishing the skin with botanical hydration before concentrated oils and balms are applied.
This is not water scented with essential oil. It is the water created through the distillation of the plant itself.
Whole Resins Extracted
Beyond the essential oil.
Frankincense and myrrh are complex whole resins, yet they are commonly represented in skincare only by their essential oils. Distillation captures the volatile aromatic fraction, but many of the heavier resin compounds remain behind.
We developed a layered extraction process that works beyond the essential oil. Our whole frankincense and myrrh resins are distilled, slowly infused and further extracted to capture a broader range of their naturally occurring compounds, including the nonvolatile resin constituents that ordinary steam distillation leaves behind.
This resin-rich foundation is central to our approach to skin renewal, resilience and longevity.

These formulas begin with the same whole-plant foundation and pair it with a small number of carefully selected, evidence-backed actives.
Stable vitamin C, purified bakuchiol and other gentle actives are used intentionally, at purposeful concentrations, to offer visible support without asking sensitive skin to endure unnecessary irritation.
